Humbermud Expo! Begins

humberMUD Expo! October 21st - 24th @ FRuIT, Humber Street, Hull

The inaugural humberMUD Expo! got under way with an evening that incorporated film screenings, film-makers and some sound legal advice courtesy of a leading law firm.

The night was the first of four days of events scheduled by the local networking and knowledge-sharing co-operative humberMUD, all of which emphasise the importance of creativity and highlight the strength of media and creative businesses in Hull and the Humber. An audience of around 80 delegates also enjoyed the opportunity to forge business links and meet fellow creatives.

MUD chair Mal Williamson kicked off proceedings with the declaration that “humberMUD expo! Is open” before making way for presentations by Lindsay Gordon of Andrew Jackson, who discussed the legal ramifications of social networking sites, and local film-making talent that included Kurdish documentary maker Havi Ibrahim, Jay Moy, O-Ten and Peter Goundrill.

Mal Williamson said: “This is the first event of its kind and we got off to a great start. There's a wealth of creative projects that people are involved in in the area and we're very happy to be able to provide a platform that enables people to shout loudly about what they do. We bring together, in our own very unique way, an increasingly vibrant sector.”

Other events scheduled include the Media:Education:Interface conference today (Friday, October 22) and, tonight, an audio-visual extravaganza featuring a live DJ set by EndOfLevelBaddie, both of which are free to enter. MUD's first Old Technologies Ball has sold out while the public can gain free entry to film screenings on Sunday (October 24) afternoon and Saturday's (October 23) Media Market Day.

Talking about the upcoming Media Market Day, Mal Williamson added: “We'll have a host of media specialists on hand to network with, discuss business opportunities and offer advice. There will be some mini-workshops. We've got everything from local book publishers, online publishers, content creators and large communications agencies to specialists in writing, social media and blogging. We'd like to see as many new faces as possible, whether they just want to see what's going on or whether they'd like to get involved or work in the creative industries.

“We're hoping to make these media markets a regular occurrence if the first one is successful. So, if you're potentially a future exhibitor, please come down and see what we're up to on Saturday and see if it's for you.”
