"What the hell is going on?" That was the question Mal Williamson wanted to get an answer to at this month's humberMUD, which played host to the City Arts Forum.
For those who don’t know already the City Arts Forum is an open meeting every three months to discuss arts-based events and opportunities in Hull and the wider community.
MUD headed back to the cold expanse of Fruit this month for a mixed bag that took in crisis PR, photoblogging and the hot topic of Hullness. An industrial blower, cranked up between speakers, kept the climate tolerable for the die-hard MUD folk that made the effort on this chilly January evening.
An intimate venue, a raging debate and live performances - not to mention free food and drink – are the ingredients that make a classic MUD. And that's what December had as MUD crossed the road to Studio Eleven on Humber Street, with KC prepared to put themselves in the firing line, while two poets looked on wondering if they'd turned up to perform on the wrong night.
Excellent speaking contributions and visual stimulation from photographer Chris Oaten, his muse Kitty Griffiths and lens-based creative Scott Wigglesworth were somewhat overshadowed by the new Clear as Mud forum at November's humberMUD.
Somebody, somewhere, probably mumbled under their breath that it couldn’t be done. Four days of humberMUD activity? And most of it free to enter? Does not compute.
Yet there’s no holding this creative co-operative and its growing membership down and four days of activity, with six diverse events, were exactly what was on offer at the first – but surely not the last – humberMUD expo!

humberMUD is a regular networking and knowledge event for Media, Usability and Design in the Humber region. Featuring drinks, food and music... guest speakers... debate and discussion.
The Hull event takes place on the third Thursday of each month and the South Bank event on the second Tuesday.
